School of Applied Economics of Renmin University of China

The first school of applied economics among China’s “Double-First Class” initiative Universities

School of Applied Economics (SAE) at Renmin University of China, formed in 2019, is the first school of applied economics among China’s “Double-First Class” initiative Universities. The history of SAE could be traced back to 1950, when the newly-formed RUC set up the Department of Economic Planning and Research Division of Economic Geography. Since the early days of the People’s Republic of China, RUC has been an important national center for teaching and research of applied economics, and has earned a strong reputation in applied economics. The assessments conducted by the Chinese Ministry of Education (2004, 2008, 2012, 2017 and 2021 ) consistently ranked RUC top in teaching and research of applied economics.

SAE currently has a diverse group of 57 faculty members. More than half have oversea study experience and earn Ph.D. degree from top universities over the world. Many more are thought leaders in their respective research areas.

SAE aims to continue providing important and timely research in applied economics and train future generations of policy-makers. The research areas are largely spread across economic topics, including national economic management, input-output analysis, national defense, regional and urban economics, energy m market and policy, climate change economics, poverty reduction and sustainable development, industrial economics, digital economics, carbon economics, etc.
